While it would be ideal to close 100% of the existing and prospective clients that we meet with on new work, that is not always the case. So, what do you do? Do you just let them walk out the door and never to hear from them? Do you continue to spend valuable time following up with them to no avail? Do you potentially have a malpractice issue on your hands if there’s a miscommunication about what was discussed and the nature of your attorney-client relationship?
The best thing to do is to send a follow-up letter which you can then place a copy of in the prospect or client’s file so that if you should ever need to, you would have this “CYA” letter at the ready. Additionally, it’s a great way to clarify the relationship you have (or don’t!) with your prospective and existing clients, while also prompting them to make a decision about which way they want to go.
Depending on the circumstances (existing or prospective client), you may have a different follow-up letter and we are pleased to provide you a modifiable form letter to use to follow-up with your clients where applicable.
